What are PFAS?
Perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate–more commonly referred to as PFOA and PFOS, respectively–are fluorinated organic compounds that are part of larger group of compounds known as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
With production taking off in the 1950’s, PFOA and PFOS were commonly used to coat products that were designed to be stain-resistant, waterproof, or non-stick. Although convenient, these highly fluorinated chemicals are associated with some serious health problems. Their negative health effects are compounded by the fact that they persist in the environment for a very, very long time therefore known as “forever chemicals.” In fact, they do not break down in the environment at all.
PFOS and PFOA in Drinking Water
PFOS/PFOA in drinking water supplies is a special concern. General Carbon can help supply the appropriate activated carbon for their removal. The application of granular activated carbon (GAC)-based adsorption technology is proven for PFOS/PFOA removal.
Using Granular Activated Carbon to Remove PFOS and PFOA
Granular activated carbons are currently being used for the successful removal of PFOS and PFOA chemicals from water. Our products contain the appropriate sub-micro porosity for effective removal of these compounds.
General Carbon’s re-agglomerated bituminous coal-based products can be utilized for PFOS/PFOA removal to provide consistent results and keep your industrial and drinking water supplies clean and safe. Check out our list of industries we serve here.
General Carbon Can Help You with Your PFOS and PFOA Adsorption Questions
